Rebels double up Pats 4-2 to close out winning November

Nov 27, 2021 | 9:43 PM

The Red Deer Rebels halted their two-game losing skid on Saturday, besting the Regina Pats — winners of three straight — by a final score of 4-2.

Coming in, the Rebels were losers of a pair; in Edmonton on Wednesday and at home to Saskatoon last night.

With their latest win, Red Deer moves to 15-8-1-0, and can boast a record of 7-4-0-0 in November. That’s even more impressive considering only four of their games were played at home — they went 3-1-0-0 in those games, improving their overall home record to an identical 7-4-0-0.

The team sits second in the Central Division, two behind Edmonton and 14 ahead of third place Lethbridge.

“It was good to get back in the win column. Now we have a week here to do some practice, and it’s always more fun and easier to work after a win,” said Rebels Head Coach Steve Konowalchuk post-game.

“Our guys came out pretty strong, but we made it harder on ourselves in the second half with some puck decisions. At the end of the day, their team pushed pretty hard too, but we got a win. We’ll take a breather and get back to work.

“Our guys compete,” he added. “We want to be able to initiate when it’s time to do so, but we also need to be strong on pucks. If that means taking a hit to make a play, that’s what hockey is all about.”

Goals didn’t take long to materialize Saturday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Just 1:57 in, Liam Keeler (8th) scored to make it 1-0 Red Deer. Christoffer Sedoff got the lone assist.

Then, at 7:05, Ryker Evans (4th) equalized for Regina.

Just 50 seconds later, however, Red Deer re-took the lead with Jace Isley (2nd) scoring with a little help from Arshdeep Bains. The assist for Bains extended his point streak to six games.

After 20 minutes, it was 2-1 home team.

In the second, it was Bains (9th), beating Drew Sim on the power play at 14:57 — Blake Stevenson and Sedoff with the apples

It was 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Fast forward to the 10:17 mark of the third period, and Ben King (16th) tallied putting him in a tie for second in WHL goal-scoring with Winnipeg’s Mikey Milne. Only Winnipeg’s Connor McClennon has more with 19. Bains had another assist — his third point of the night — on the 4-1 goal.

Borya Valis (3rd) drew the Pats within two at the 17:19 mark, but that was as close as they’d come.

Bains (9G, 17A, 26P) and King (16G, 9A, 25P) are #1 and #2 in team scoring after Saturday’s game in which Bains earned first star honours. King had himself a night too, firing seven shots on net.

Isley and Sedoff were named second and third star of the game.

Meantime, the reigning WHL Goaltender of the Week, Chase Coward, stopped 31 of 33 shots, improving to 9-6-0-0 with a 2.34 GAA and .918 SV% on the season.

Red Deer and Regina each had 33 shots on the night. Red Deer went 1/5 on the power play, and Regina was 0/3.
