Smile Cookies raised over $38,000 in Red Deer this year

Nov 25, 2021 | 11:38 AM

Red Deerians consumed 38,671 Tim Hortons Smile Cookies this past September.

That same dollar amount — $1 per cookie from every Tim’s across Canada — supports local charities.

Red Deer locations have for several years pooled their proceeds to give to the Reading College, a program under the umbrella of the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools.

“The Smile Cookie Campaign is a great opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of literacy, it really does create life chances for students. Reading College is made possible through great support from our community and Tim Hortons – we could not operate it without this support,” said Kristine Plastow, Foundation Board Chair. “We are so grateful to the community for buying Smile Cookies and supporting this fantastic program.”

Adds Tanya Doucette, restaurant owner: “I would like to thank our loyal guests for their generosity and support of the Smile Cookie campaign. Tim Hortons is thrilled to support The Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools and Reading College with the funds raised and bring smiles to so many people’s faces.”

There was also a cheque presentation at the new Timberlands location on Thursday for last year’s amount, which couldn’t be done due to COVID. That amount was $35,979.

Reading College supports approximately 60 Grade 2 students every summer, who spend several weeks at Red Deer Polytechnic upgrading their reading skills in advance of Grade 3.
