The Red Deer Rebels saw their five game winning streak come to an end after a 5-3 loss to the Oil Kings at Rogers Place in Edmonton Wednesday night.

The first period was off to a slow start until the Rebels broke the ice two and a half minutes before the buzzer rang. The goal came on a power play following a hooking penalty to Edmonton’s Braeden Wynne. Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz scored his seventh goal of the season on goaltender Sebastien Cossa, and was assisted by Ben King and Christoffer Sedoff.

Although the Rebels had a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play, it was Edmonton who outshot Red Deer 11-9 to that point.

Things weren’t looking any better for the Oil Kings when the puck dropped in the second period when Logan Dowhaniuk was sent to the box in the first 10 seconds for kneeing. But just over one minute later, the team flipped a 180 for the rest of the game. Even with fewer men on the ice, Carson Golder scored his second goal of the season on Rebels netminder Chase Coward. The short-handed goal was assisted by Jake Neighbours and Dylan Guenther, and tied the game 1-1.

Then at the 6:34 mark, the Oil Kings’ Dylan Guenther scored his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Dawson Seitz and once again Jake Neighbours, giving Edmonton a 2-1 lead.

Edmonton scored again soon afterwards, when Jalen Luypen netted his eighth goal of the season and was assisted by Logan Dowhaniuk and Luke Prokop, making the score 3-1.

But the Rebels didn’t give up that easy, as Jace Isley scored his first of the season at 16:40, assisted by Kai Uchacz and Kyle Masters making it 3-2 Edmonton.

Less than a minute later, Red Deer’s Jhett Larson received a penalty for boarding. With the man advantage, Edmonton’s Josh William scored his 10th of the season at 18:19, bringing the score to 4-2 Edmonton. The goal was assisted by Jakub Demek and Jake Neighbours.

Although the Oil Kings had more goals, it was in fact Red Deer that outshot Edmonton 20-10 in the second period.

The final period, however, was no less exciting for fans. The Rebels scored at the 6:44 mark when Carter Anderson potted his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Arshdeep Bains, bringing the score to 4-3 Edmonton.

With the game so close, the Oil Kings sealed their win with an insurance goal in the final three minutes. Jalen Luypen scored his ninth of the season and second of the game, assisted by Simon Kubicek and Jakub Demek. The final score 5-3 Edmonton.

While both teams managed a goal each in the final period, shots on goal were 8-4 in favour of the Oil Kings. After 60 minutes, shots were 33-29 Red Deer.

On the power play, the Rebels went 1/7 on the evening, while the Oil Kings went 1/3.

Edmonton received all three stars for the game with Jake Neighbours given the third star for his three assists, Dylan Guenther the second star, and Jalen Luypen first star for his two goals on the evening.

The Rebels now prepare for a four game home stand beginning this weekend when they host the Saskatoon Blades on Friday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
