Sentencing planned for January in fatal Lacombe shooting

Nov 19, 2021 | 2:15 PM

It’s hoped that sentencing will take place early next year for a man charged in the fatal shooting of a young Ponoka man in Lacombe nearly two years ago.

Tyler John Campbell, 29, is charged with manslaughter with a firearm in the death of 20-year-old Jeffery Kraft.

Kraft passed away on Dec. 15, 2019 following injuries sustained from a gunshot wound, in what has been described in court as an accidental shooting over an alleged debt.

Campbell appeared in Red Deer provincial court through CCTV on Friday to set a new date for sentencing, which was originally scheduled to take place earlier this week on Nov. 16.

Judge Jim Hunter told court on Friday that a Crown request to have the sentencing take place by the end of November was not realistic. He suggested a date in the second week of January would be more workable. A specific date, however, was not given.

The Crown and defence have put forward a joint submission of seven years in prison for Campbell.
