Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics recap

On Saturday, the Kings and Queens Cross Country Running teams placed in the top 10 at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team defeated the Briercrest College Clippers in double overtime. The Kings and Queens Volleyball teams downed the Lethbridge College Kodiaks twice. The Kings and Queens Basketball teams split their two-game series with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and the RDP Queens Hockey team dropped a road decision to the NAIT Ooks.

Cross Country Running | Nationals | Saturday, November 13 | St. Mary’s University

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Cross Country team placed eighth at the national championships. The Queens finished 10th.

Red Deer’s Devin Saunders (27:41) led the way for the Kings, placing 24th among male participants over 8 km. Strathmore’s Justine Larson (25:43) paced the Queens, sealing 31st among female participants over 6 km.

Kings Basketball | Friday, November 12 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team defeated the Lethbridge College Kodiaks 90-83.

Tyronn King was named the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game. The Legal Assistant student contributed 30 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Kings Basketball | Sunday, November 14 | Lethbridge College

The Kodiaks took the rematch 83-74 over the Kings.

Tyronn King had another 30 point performance.

Queens Basketball | Friday, November 12 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team had a late push in the fourth quarter but fell 74-66 to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

Stauffer’s Amy Szymanek was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game. The Bachelor of Education Middle School student had 18 points, 12 rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Queens Basketball | Sunday, November 14 | Lethbridge College

The Queens had a tremendous bounce back effort and earned an impressive 75-68 road victory.

Lauren France, a Bachelor of Arts Psychology student, was the Queens’ offensive leader, totaling 25 points, along with six rebounds and one steal.

Kings Hockey | Friday, November 12 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team downed the Briercrest College Clippers 7-6 in double overtime.

Kyle Salaway, Jacob Kendall, Chance Longjohn, Mathieu Lapointe, Tucker Scantlebury and Ryley Smith scored for the Kings during regulation. Captain Tyler Podgorenko recorded the game winner.

Queens Hockey | Friday, November 12 | NAIT

In Edmonton, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team experienced a 4-1 setback against the NAIT Ooks.

Spruce Grove’s Natalie Buttle scored the Queens’ lone goal, which was her first in the ACAC.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, November 12 | Lethbridge College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team powered past the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in four sets (20-25, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22).

Setter Maddux Greves accumulated 44 assists, 10 digs, four aces, and one kill. Australia’s Patrik Toze had 16 kills for the Kings.

Kings Volleyball | Sunday, November 14 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings swept the Kodiaks (25-17, 25-15 and 26-24) in Red Deer.

Six-foot-three outside hitter Reece Lehman was recognized as the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game. He contributed nine kills, six digs, one ace, and one stuff block.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, November 12 | Lethbridge College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens swept the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (25-14, 25-23, and 26-24).

Libero Kaylee Domoney had seven digs and one assist over three sets. Outside hitter Jaiden Ferguson led the Queens with 12 kills.

Queens Volleyball | Sunday, November 14 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens continued to roll and defeated the Kodiaks in straight sets (25-19, 25-21 and 25-15).

Outside hitter Jadyn Leong led Red Deer Polytechnic with 11 kills and was selected the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game. The Business Administration General student added 11 digs, two assists and one service ace.
