Rebels earn road win in Moose Jaw

The Red Deer Rebels are now tied for first place in the WHL’s Central Division after a 5-2 win over the Warriors at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw Tuesday evening.

The first period began in a flash with a power play goal by Red Deer’s Ben King, scoring his ninth of the season on goaltender Carl Tetachuk at the 6:10 mark. With Moose Jaw’s Cade Hayes in the penalty box for tripping, the Rebel’s Arshdeep Bains seized the opportunity by assisting on the goal.

After 20 minutes of play, shots were 12-10 in favour of Red Deer.

The second period became heated in even less time, as Red Deer’s Carter Anderson scored his fourth goal of the season in two and a half minutes within skating on the ice. The goal was sssisted by Kalan Lind and Talon Brigley, making it 2-0 Rebels.

The Warriors were not waving the white flag just yet though, as Brayden Yager scored his eighth goal of the season on netminder Chase Coward at the 14:09 mark, assisted by Daemon Hunt and Ryder Korczak to close the Rebels lead to 2-1.

Moose Jaw outshot Red Deer 15-13 in the second period, making the shots tied 25-25 after 40 minutes.

Low and behold, the third period took just a few seconds to get going, 44 seconds to be exact. Red Deer’s Jhett Larson scored his fifth goal of the season with the help of Arshdeep Bains to push the score to 3-1 Red Deer.

The Warriors bounced back shortly after, however, scoring on a power play due to an interference penalty to the Rebels Jace Weir. Denton Mateychuk scored his sixth goal of the season at 3:09, assisted by Jagger Firkus and Mejid Kaddoura and the scoreboard showing a 3-2 lead for the visitors.

Then with the Warriors trailing, the Rebels scored their insurance goal at the 16:31 mark, with Ben King’s 10th goal of the season, assisted once again by Arsheep Bains, making the score 4-2.

In a final attempt to catch up and the Rebels’s Kalan Lind in the box for tripping, Moose Jaw pulled their goalie with less than three minutes remaining. At the 18:12 mark, the Rebels’ Liam Keeler scored a short-handed empty-netter and his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Blake Stevenson to make it a 5-2 final.

Shots on goal were 15-8 in favour of Red Deer during the third period, making for a three-period total of 40-33 in favour of the visitors.

Both teams went 1/3 on the power play.

The third star of the game went to Red Deer’s goaltender Chase Coward. The second star went to Moose Jaw’s Denton Mateychuk. The first star was given to the Rebels’ Ben King.

The win pushed the Rebel’s record to 10-6-1 on the season, while the Warriors drop to third place in the East Division with a record of 6-8-0.

The Rebels will head to Saskatchewan’s capital for tomorrow night’s game, November 10, against the Regina Pats at the Brandt Centre at 7 p.m. CDT (6 p.m. MT)
