Lindsay Thurber High School hosting virtual Remembrance Day service Nov. 9

Nov 9, 2021 | 9:40 AM

Central Albertans who normally like to attend the annual Remembrance Day service held at École Secondaire Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer each year, will have to do so virtually this year.

The event will begin at 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 9, and you can watch it live at this link.

Chris Good, Principal, Lindsay Thurber High School, says viewers can expect to see something very similar to what they would traditionally see under ‘normal” circumstances.

“Because of some of the restrictions with COVID around large gatherings and things like that, what we’re going to be doing is we’ve built a space in the school where only the people that will be part of the ceremony will be in that room and then it will just be recorded,” he explains. “So this year we’re able to have the band that will be performing, the choir will be performing, and then we’ll do a lot of the things that we would traditionally do in our ceremonies.”

“We also have two parents that are veterans who are going to be attending the ceremony to represent all veterans,” adds Good.

He acknowledges a tremendous amount of work and planning that goes into the event each year.

“For our school, it’s probably the biggest event that we host on an annual basis,” shares Good. “One of the things that’s really valued here is the tradition of our school and the tradition of all the students that have attended here and we really want to honour the veterans that have attended our school and also all veterans. Every year our committee really works hard to make sure that they put on a ceremony that is worthy of the honour that is so well-deserved by all of those who have served us.”

‘We also want kids to be able to learn the importance of this day and the importance of the sacrifice that was made by those that came before us,” says Good. “One of the things that our school has done for a long time, is we have the Memorial Wall for students who attended our school or previous versions of our school that gave their lives fighting over seas and our students, every other year, usually go to France on an exchange and they visit the graves of some of those students.”

Good notes some veterans and a representative of the Legion will also be in attendance during Tuesday’s ceremony.
