Five-Day Workshop In Blackfalds

New program aims to address critical veterinarian shortage

A severe shortage of veterinarians coupled with surging adoption rates during the pandemic has meant trouble for an already stressed veterinary industry.

That according to Alberta-based Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), Becky Taylor, who says a new program aims to address this problem head on by mobilizing RVTs.

“The severe shortage of veterinarians is something our industry has been struggling with for some time,” said Taylor. “By mobilizing RVTS we can equip them with the skills and know-how to see clients and support veterinarians, therefore easing their patient load.”

During a comprehensive five-day workshop in Blackfalds, AB, Taylor says participants will learn how to provide wellness and vaccination appointments for small animals, communication skills, animal behaviour, risk assessment and more.

The final day includes a simulated scenario with clients and patients. “By working with professionals in the veterinary industry, we are able to teach a range of practical skills to already highly skilled and motivated members of the clinic team,” added Taylor.

“My ultimate goal, as it has been for my entire career, is to support the great work that veterinarians do, practice good medicine, and provide exceptional client care. I am in a position in my career, my education, and my business to offer this type of programmingthat is credible, evidence based and wildly appropriate for our current situation,” said Taylor.

The Mobilizing RVTs program runs from November 17-21, 2021.
