Rebels’ Lind and Red Deer’s Lodewyk named to U17 rosters for Capital City Challenge

Nov 6, 2021 | 11:00 AM

Red Deer Rebels forward Kalan Lind has been selected to play at the upcoming Capital City Challenge.

The event runs Nov. 26-Dec. 1 in Ottawa, and is a four team tournament comprised of 66 Canadian junior players (under 17 years of age) divided amongst three teams. The fourth team is Canada’s national women’s squad.

The 16-year-old Lind’s selection was announced the same day the Western Hockey League said he would be suspended following a kneeing major he received in a game against Winnipeg on Nov. 4. The length of that suspension is still TBD as of Saturday morning.

In his first full season with the Rebels, Lind, a native of Shaunavon, SK, has scored three goals and added one assist in 14 games.

Meantime, Harrison Lodewyk of Red Deer, has played 12 games with the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders this season, but is still searching for his first point.

The 2020 2nd rounder’s play, however, has been enough to impress Hockey Canada.

Lodewyk, 16, played last season for the Red Deer Chiefs U18 AAA team, notching four points in the COVID-shortened five-game season. He also played for the U15 AAA Rebels and U16 AAA Red Deer Northstar Chiefs.

“We are excited to unveil the 66 players that will suit up for our three men’s under-17 teams at the Capital City Challenge and have the unique opportunity to compete against Canada’s National Women’s Team in Ottawa,” said Hockey Canada senior vice-president of hockey operations Scott Salmond.

“Although this has not been a traditional year for our Program of Excellence and the under-17 group, we are excited to introduce these athletes to an event that replicates short-term, international competition.”

Kris Mallette (Kelowna Rockets), Brad Herauf (Regina Pats) and Gordon Burnett (Moose Jaw Warriors) will serve as coaches, as will Kelly Guard (Prince Albert Raiders) and Landon Watson (Regina Pats).
