E-scooter pilot project wraps up first season

Oct 29, 2021 | 1:59 PM

The first season of a three-year e-scooter pilot project in Red Deer is over as of Oct. 31.

The City describes the first go-round as ‘very successful,’ but now wants to formally collect feedback from users.

An online survey is available through Nov. 15. Responses may lead to modifications to the pilot project for 2022, and could help inform whether e-scooters become a permanent fixture in the city past 2023.

Residents can visit reddeer.ca/escooter to take the survey.

The City says it is still collecting data from the six e-scooter companies to determine ridership and other metrics.

It was in May this year that city council approved bylaw changes to facilitate the pilot, this after reviewing similar projects in Calgary and Edmonton.

Calgary’s e-scooter program is now permanent, and Edmonton’s pilot project ended this year.

There is currently an open market model in Red Deer, with any company able to buy their way in with a minimum security deposit of $5,000.

The first season started July 1, though there’s no word yet on if that will remain the same for round two.
