Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics update

Oct 28, 2021 | 7:58 AM

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics is proud to announce its RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Sofia Quinteros – Queens Soccer

Hometown – Edmonton, AB. Bachelor of Science Nursing (1st year)

First-year Sofia Quinteros has been described as a consistent performer for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team all season and is said to have extended that strong play into Calgary last Saturday.

Despite the Queens dropping a 3-0 decision to the SAIT Trojans in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division final, the talented midfielder made an impact once again. RDP Athletics officials say she displayed a relentless work ethic, moving the ball efficiently and closing the gaps quickly on SAIT’s ball carriers. For her outstanding effort against the Trojans, Quinteros was recognized as the Queens Player of the Game.

The Bachelor of Science Nursing student has become known as one of the best, young midfielders in the league.

Quinteros and the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will host the Concordia University Thunder for ACAC bronze on Saturday, October 30 at 1 pm.

2. Masoum Zaher – Kings Soccer

Hometown – Red Deer, AB. Open Studies (3rd year)

RDP Athletics officials say Masoum Zaher was a stabilizing force on defence for the Kings Soccer team against the SAIT Trojans in the ACAC South Division final. Even though SAIT took the contest 3-0, the student-athlete from Red Deer is said to have made smart decisions and had a strong game positionally. Officials note, it was a challenge to face the high powered Trojans’ offence, but the Open Studies student limited the potential of more SAIT scoring opportunities with a fundamentally sound performance.

Prior to this season, Zaher previously played eight games for the Kings in 2016/2017 and 10 games in 2014/2015.

On October 30, Zaher and the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will challenge the Lakeland College Rustlers for conference bronze on the road at 3 pm.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team will challenge for a medal at the ACAC Championships. Both soccer squads will compete for ACAC bronze on Saturday.

Cross Country Running | Saturday, October 30 | 2 pm | U of A Augustana

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Cross Country Running teams consistently finished in the top three over a trio of conference competitions this season, and both squads are preparing to bring their best at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships in Camrose.

“Our training moved towards maintaining intensity in our workouts but decreasing the overall volume. We had our last big workout on Friday, doing one kilometre repeats on a hilly loop that got us in the mindset for the hills of Camrose,” said Kari Elliott, Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running Head Coach, in a press release. “Most of our training is designed to feel fast at this point in the season. The work has been done and now it is about managing any small injuries and peaking for the 30th.”

The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings also hosted Running Room Grand Prix #2, where Red Deer Polytechnic won the combined team trophy. At that race, the Kings earned second among ACAC male teams. The Queens captured third among conference female squads.

The Red Deer Polytechnic student-athletes are said to be using that experience to help them at the ACAC Championships on Saturday.

“The biggest lesson from Grand Prix #2 was pacing. Most of our athletes ran the first half too fast and suffered in the second half,” added Elliott. “We also need to run steady up the hills and crush the downhills.”

Elliott feels the team has improved, however, since the second grand prix.

“That race in Camrose was only the second of our abbreviated season, so we are in far better shape now than we were then,” she said. “We are preparing to be our best and to look for opportunities to move up – individually and as a team.”

Officials say the Kings and Queens have their sights on a medal.

“The main goal heading into this championship is to land both teams in the top three and secure a spot at nationals,” explained Elliott. “This is an achievable goal for sure.”

St. Mary’s University will host the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Calgary.

Queens Soccer | Saturday, October 30 | 1 pm | Red Deer Polytechnic Main Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team (4-2-0) will compete against the Concordia University Thunder (4-2-0) in the ACAC bronze medal match at home. During the regular season, the Queens placed third in the south. The Thunder were second in the north.

Over six regular season games, the Queens outscored their opponents 41-10, while the Thunder struck 25 times and allowed six goals over the same span.

Breanna Callander led Concordia University with five goals. Lacombe’s Jenica Swartz had 14 regular season goals, which were the most on the Queens and in the league.

Fans are welcome to attend this game.

The NAIT Ooks (4-1-1) and SAIT Trojans (6-0-0) will battle in the ACAC Championship game.

Kings Soccer | Saturday, October 30 | 3 pm | Location – TBD (away from Red Deer Polytechnic)

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team (4-1-1) will play the Lakeland College Rustlers (4-1-1) for ACAC bronze on the road. Both squads finished second in their divisions.

The Kings scored 22 times and allowed six goals over six regular season contests, while the Rustlers outscored their northern opponents 12-9.

Hani Tekheste scored four of the 12 goals for Lakeland College, while Brazil’s Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto ignited Red Deer Polytechnic’s offence with seven goals and one assist during the regular season.

The NAIT Ooks (5-0-1) will face the SAIT Trojans (5-0-1) in the ACAC gold medal match.
