New non-profit offering support worker training

A new non-profit agency in central Alberta is hoping to train support workers.

APLETS — Alberta Prairies life Enrichment Training Studio — is offering a 12-week Life Enrichment Support Worker program.

The course is designed specifically for individuals interested in starting a career as a support worker for vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens. That may include people who are elderly or frail, living with special needs, those who are experiencing addiction, mental illness, or chronic mental health concerns.

The course is also in partnership with Central Alberta Brain Injury Society (CABIS) and is made possible by a generous anonymous local donor.

Students who attend will be offered funding assistance.

Program topics include:

-the eight types of disabilities
-empathy/sensitivity awareness
-conflict management
-professional boundaries

Certificates participants will complete in the program include:

-trauma-informed care
-positive behaviour support
-standard FA/CPR
-mental health first aid
-Indigenous awareness training
-cultural awareness training
-applied suicide intervention skills training

The program also involves a 120 hour practicum with a to-be-determined central Alberta agency.
