Alberta surpasses 3,000 deaths linked to COVID-19

On Wednesday, Alberta surpassed the grim milestone of 3,000 COVID-linked deaths

A COVID-linked fatality means the disease was determined to be either the primary or secondary cause of death.

There were 18 deaths reported in the last day, for a pandemic total in Alberta of 3,006.

Meantime, the active caseload is now 10,824, down 578. This with the province adding 786 cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. The province also did 12,114 tests in the last day, with a seven-day positivity rate of 7.28 per cent.

Hospitalizations

There are 928 people in hospital, down 36 in one day, and ICU admissions are down 15 to 203.

Of the 725 not in ICU, 436 are unvaccinated, 66 have had one dose, and 223 have had two doses.

Of the 203 in ICU, 172 are unvaccinated, nine have had one dose, and 22 have had two doses.

CENTRAL ZONE

Red Deer now has 382 active cases of COVID-19, down 60 from Tuesday.

Red Deer hit a new peak of 915 on Sept. 27, topping its previous high of 911 on May 8 at the height of the third wave.

Meantime, recoveries in Red Deer rose 62 to 8,336 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose by just two in the last day to 8,791.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 is 73, with none reported today.

The Central Zone as a whole has 2,011 active cases as of Wednesday, down 198 in the last day. That’s compared to 2,773 in Calgary Zone and 2,603 in Edmonton Zone.

There are 174 hospitalizations in our zone, down five, and 20 people are receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down one.

Central Zone has recorded 338 deaths, including four in the last day.

The zone’s one-day positivity rate for Oct. 19 is 6,21 per cent, with 1,434 tests done. That’s the lowest one-day rate since Aug. 14 when it reached 4.96 per cent.

VACCINATIONS

Alberta has delivered 6,389,130 vaccine doses as of Oct. 19, up 20,250 in the last day.

86.2 per cent of Alberta’s eligible 12+ population has received at least one dose (73.4% total population), and 77.9 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated (66.2% total population).

In Red Deer, 71,798 (78.3% of eligible & 67.5% *total population) people have received at least one dose, up 87. Meanwhile, 64,618 (70.5%/60.7%) are fully vaccinated with two doses, up 163. (*Government of Alberta uses a population of 106,395 for Red Deer; of those 91,672 are eligible)
