‘Rebel Moon’ burger sales raise $1,482 for Special Olympics Alberta

Cilantro and Chive has put a bow on its latest Burger of the Month (BOTM) with a trip to Edmonton.

At the Red Deer location, September’s guest chef was Cam Moon, current play-by-play man for the Edmonton Oilers, and former longtime voice of the Red Deer Rebels.

Through sales of Moon’s concoction, the ‘Rebel Moon,’ $1,482 is going to Special Olympics Alberta.

The cause is close to Moon’s heart because of his friend and Rebels longtime dressing room attendant Mikel McIver.

“I worked with Mikel, and he became a good friend,” says Moon. “I was able to see the positive impact Special Olympics made on his life. That’s the type of impact I’d like to support.”

Special Olympics Alberta supports over 3000 athletes in over 26 community programs. BOTM dollars will help fund the return of their virtual PEAK Program, according to restaurant owners Kim and Rieley Kay.

Under the program, they deliver eight-week sessions designed to keep athletes healthy, connected, and active at home while they navigate the challenges of the pandemic. Special Olympics delivers virtual sessions from workouts to nutrition. Donations also support daily training for athletes who compete at regional, provincial, national, and international Games.

Over the last 56 months, Cilantro and Chive has donated more than $90,000 to local charities.

The October Burger of the Month in Red Deer is ‘Stacked Up,’ created in collaboration with local guest chef Ashley Jackson. It includes roasted brussel sprout and walnut pesto, gorgonzola cheese, beef and pork blended smash patties, prosciutto, fresh apple slices, shredded white cheddar cheese and lays salt n vinegar chips on salt n’ vinegar dusted and toasted potato roll.

Two dollars from every ‘Stacked Up’ burger sold goes directly to Ashley’s charity of choice – the Centre for Child & Adolescent Mental Health through the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
