Red Deer Mounties lay impaired driving charges

Oct 8, 2021 | 10:18 PM

Impaired driving charges have been laid after an incident nearby two Red Deer schools.

RCMP say it was just after 10 a.m. on Oct. 5 when members responded to a complaint regarding a black Ford Mustang driving erratically near Eastview Middle School.

It had been reported that the vehicle had nearly hit another vehicle, was entering other lanes, and had hit the curb several times in front of the school.

The vehicle was then reported to be headed northbound towards Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, and Mounties located it in that school’s parking lot.

A Mandatory Alcohol Screening was initiated and the male driver was found to be impaired by alcohol.

The driver was placed under provincial sanctions with an immediate suspension of his driver’s licence, and the vehicle was seized for 30 days. The driver was also given a ticket for careless driving, which carries a fine of $567.

“Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injury and has devastating impacts on families,” says Mike Zufferli, Red Deer RCMP. “This incident was very concerning because the vehicle had driven through two separate school zones at a time of day when children are present.”

The public has a part to play in the fight against impaired driving, Zufferli adds. If you witness dangerous driving behaviour or a suspected impaired driver, call 9-1-1 immediately.
