Run for the Cure this Sunday with the Canadian Cancer Society and CIBC

The Canadian Cancer Society’s CIBC Run for the Cure is back this Sunday, Oct 3.

Much like the recent Terry Fox Run, the event will be held virtually this year.

The annual event, which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research in Canada, will kick off with a virtual opening ceremonies starting at 11:00 a.m. EST (9:00 a.m. Mountain). It will be broadcast on Facebook and YouTube, as well as being presented on YES TV for the first time ever.

Janet Dixie is the run director for the Red Deer CIBC Run for the Cure, which will be the 19th year in a row for the local event.

“There’s so many good people that have been part of the run for so long. They are still able to bring that community feeling together by doing it, even if they are just in their own community and walking around their block and wearing pink.”

Dixie says participants can download a Run Event Day Guide app which includes the entire days worth of events, a tracking map so you can run along with your friends at the same time, and even a music playlist so everyone can be running to the same tunes.

Dixie, who participated in the last four runs locally, has been with the Canadian Cancer Society for a decade. She says people are getting into the groove with the new way events like these are being hosted in these pandemic times.

“People are pretty upbeat and content with how the fundraising is going and how they get to participate.”
