regular season: this weekend

Straight from NY Rangers training camp, Rebels captain ready for regular season

Coming off a strong 6-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes this past Saturday in pre-season action, the Red Deer Rebels are eager to get the regular season started.

The Rebels will be in Edmonton on Friday, Oct. 1, and then they’ll host the Oil Kings at the Peavey Mart Centrium the following night, with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop for both games.

Centre and captain Jayden Grubbe had his season shortened last year due to knee surgery, so he was excited to start training camp with his old teammates and some new ones.

“It was really nice to get back on the ice with the guys and a couple new faces around the team. It’s an exciting group, and it looks like we’ll have a good squad this year.”

Grubbe also missed the pre-season games this year as he just returned from the New York Rangers training camp. He was selected 65th overall by the Rangers in the recent NHL draft.

He says he plans on bringing to Red Deer some of the lessons he learned in the big apple.

“It was a good experience being able to skate with the pros and skate with some AHL and other prospects and kind of ramp up the pace a bit before the season starts. It was great to be around the Rangers players and see how they play and practice, the intensity they compete at, and just how crisp they are in practice.”

Grubbe says he’s anxious to get back on the ice and help his team improve on their dismal 4-15-4 record they finished with last season.

“I think our group is better than our record has shown. Adding a couple of new pieces I think will make us really good and make us able to compete with any team in the league. A good start will be huge and we’ll just go from there.”

He says their team has a tight bond, a bond which was cemented last season when the team basically had to live at the arena due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“We had that experience that no other team had and we are able to become closer than other teams. I think we have a really good group that meshes well together, so it’ll be really exciting.”
