Trudeau: Feds ready to help Alberta in the event of an economic lockdown

Sep 28, 2021 | 3:21 PM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is ready to help Alberta with another economic lockdown if needed.

Trudeau says federal support for businesses and individuals would kick in if the province were to decide to shut down to try to bring down its high number of daily COVID-19 cases.

The prime minister says he will be speaking to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney tomorrow.

Kenney, in a weekend radio interview, rejected the idea of a lockdown.

Meantime, David Shepherd, Alberta NDP Critic for Health, made the following statement in response to Premier Andrew Furey’s statement that Jason Kenney told him to “stand down” on sending aid to Alberta:

“I am shocked to hear the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador say that he offered to send hospital staff to Alberta and was turned down. It’s been two weeks since Dr. Verna Yiu told Albertans that she was reaching out to other provinces for help. There were around 800 Albertans in hospital that day. Today, we have more than a thousand and yet Jason Kenney and the UCP are turning away help from other provinces.

“Premier Furey says Jason Kenney told him he has modelling that indicates Alberta doesn’t need extra help. The Premier must show that modelling to Albertans today and explain why the UCP is refusing to bring in reinforcement for Alberta’s exhausted healthcare heroes.”
