Four RDP teams in action over the weeken

ACAC season starts for RDP Kings and Queens

This past weekend, the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) 2021/2022 season started, and four Red Deer Polytechnic teams were in action.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team started the new campaign on the right foot with a home victory. The Queens Soccer team dropped its opening match.

In Edmonton, the RDP Kings Cross Country Running team earned top spot at Running Room Grand Prix #1 (North). The Queens finished third.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Queens Soccer | Friday, September 17 | RDP Main Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team fell 4-0 to the visiting Lethbridge College Kodiaks in its opening game of the season.

First-year Sofia Quinteros was named the Northstar Sports Queens Player of the Game. The Bachelor of Science Nursing student played well positionally and tried to spark the Queens’ offence with five shot attempts.

Kings Soccer | Friday, September 17 | RDP Main Field

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team played extremely well and defeated the Lethbridge College Kodiaks by a 5-1 margin.

Third-year Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto, a forward from Brazil, recorded three goals for the Kings. Forward Gabriel Fleury de Queiroz and midfielder Jesus Amaris had the other goals for RDP. Kings goalkeeper Jared St Thomas was solid in net, turning aside seven shots.

Fleury de Queiroz was selected as the Northstar Sports Kings Player of the Game, with one goal and four shots over 77 minutes played.

“We are trying to send a message. We are trying to tell everyone that the RDP Kings are coming this year,” said Gerald Grobmeier, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer Head Coach. “This was a good statement for us, but we have a lot of work to do still.”

Cross Country Running | Saturday, September 18 | Concordia University of Edmonton

The Red Deer Polytechnic Cross Country Running team had a strong showing at Running Room Grand Prix #1 (North) in Edmonton.

The RDP Kings Cross Country Running team earned first place among the participating ACAC male teams. Lacombe’s Daniel Szucs (30:22) paced the Kings over 8 km, finishing third among ACAC men.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens captured third spot as a team. First-year Justine Larson (29:53) finished third among ACAC female runners over 6 km in Edmonton.
