Saving Grace Animal Society in the Village of Alix is teaming up with staff at the Central Veterinary Clinic in Ponoka to lend a helping hand to 75+ cats in need through a spay/neuter clinic targeting rural properties in the surrounding communities.

Officials say the clinic aims to be able to provide assistance to owners in need of help with cat overpopulation problems on their property but are not in a financial position to take on such a project themselves.

The program also aims to ease the strain on Saving Grace’s general cat program daily while effectively reducing the amount of reproduction of unwanted cats and cats in need in the area.

According to officials at Saving Grace Animal Society, all cats through the program will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated against disease, receive complete wellness checks, identification and deworming. Some cats will return home while some are anticipate to become part of the barn buddies program or the general cat program where the Society seeks adoptive homes for them.

Among the properties being assisted includes a property with up to 50 felines. Officials say many kittens will be saved from what may have been a short life living outdoors and will be transitioned into loving homes so the mother cats won’t have to struggle anymore.

Officials note that many of the overpopulation situations are not the fault of the property owners, saying cats are smart, travel to find food and when they come across an owner who cares to feed them, end up sticking around. Other problems then occur, however, such as repopulating, sickness due to malnutrition, and inbreeding among others.
