Elections Canada still in need of poll workers for election day

Sep 15, 2021 | 10:05 AM

Elections Canada is still looking for poll workers to work on election day Sept. 20.

Officials say workers are needed in various electoral districts throughout the province, including the riding of Red Deer-Mountain View.

About 80 per cent of worker positions are currently filled, however, Returning Officers are typically said to hire more workers than needed in case a poll worker must be replaced at the last minute.

Other electoral districts also in need of workers include various areas in Edmonton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and some rural areas in Southern Alberta.

According to Elections Canada, recruitment on this scale is always a challenge and an accomplishment at each election.

  • To work, you must be a Canadian citizen and at last 16 years of age.
  • Pay ranges from $17.22 to $23.44 per hour depending on the position.
  • Poll workers are trained and receive $54.65 for the training session.
  • Positions include front line poll workers, information officers and deputing returning officers.
  • Poll workers are required to wear masks and health and safety measures will be in place at all polling stations. These measures were developed in consultation with local and provincial health authorities.
