Woody’s Triathlon takes over Michener area Sept. 11-12

The Woody’s Triathlon returns to Red Deer this weekend.

Events are happening September 11 in the Kids of Steel category, and then on Sept. 12 for older age groups.

The oldest division will do a 750 metre swim at the Michener Aquatic Centre, before a 20 kilometre bike and five kilometre run.

Clearly marked road and trail closures will be in place in the area of the Michener Aquatic Centre and Waskasoo at various times over the weekend.

Race Coordinator Shaun Richer says it feels amazing to hold the event after one year off due to COVID-19.

“This is a multi-discipline event and we want to give youth and adults the opportunity to get involved in fitness,” says Richer. “Our key mandate has always been a non-competitive, fun and safe triathlon that we can put on for athletes.”

Though lower than normal, 220 youth are registered for Saturday, with 110 for the main event on Sunday.

Route volunteers are also needed, with Richer saying it’s not too late. To sign up and for more race info, visit woodystriathlon.com.
