WEDNESDAY UPDATE

Alberta adds 18 COVID-linked deaths in one day

Sep 8, 2021 | 5:21 PM

As of initial writing, Alberta Health’s reporting of COVID-19 statistics for Sept. 8 is delayed.

However, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province’s chief medical officer of health, shared on Twitter just after 5 p.m. that 18 new deaths related to COVID-19 were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours.

She also shared that Alberta recorded 1,166 new cases out of about 10,700 test results.

According to Hinshaw, there are now 647 people in hospital, up 45 in the last day. Of those, 147 are in ICU, up 10.

Of the 500 who aren’t in ICU, 76.6 per cent are unvaccinated or partially unvaccinated. Of the 147 in ICU, 89 per cent are unvaccinated or partially unvaccinated.

An update posted late Wednesday shows Red Deer has 483 active cases, up give. That’s a result of 37 new cases and 32 new recoveries. The city has had 44 deaths.

rdnewsNOW will share a more robust update on Thursday.

Alberta Health Services also posted an update to social media around 5:30 Wednesday.

AHS went on to say the following in subsequent tweets:

“This move will allow AHS to deploy qualified staff to support intensive care and critical care beds within the Zone. Today, there are 95 ICU beds operating in Calgary which is 29 more than our usual total of ICU beds (66)

Of the 147 patients currently in ICU, 89 per cent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. We strongly urge all eligible Albertans to get immunized as quickly as possible, which is your best defence against a severe outcome from COVID-19.

Only those patients who are impacted will be contacted and their procedures will be rescheduled as soon as possible. AHS will continue with all urgent and emergent procedures, as well as prioritized cancer surgeries.

We do not make these decisions lightly, & acknowledge that postponing surgeries has a deep impact on those patients, their families, & their loved ones. Decisions related to other future surgery postponements across the coming weeks will be made based on the evolving situation.

As we said last week, this situation is serious, and we would like to remind all Albertans that we need their help in reducing the transmission of COVID-19 in the community, which in turn will reduce strain on the healthcare system.”
