“Today, another 1,315 Albertans fell ill with a dangerous virus, one that has put 465 Albertans in the hospital, of whom 107 are struggling in intensive care. Eight Albertans died over the last 24 hours,” said NDP Health Critic David Shepherd, in a press release Wednesday.

“But the premier, Jason Kenney, and his cabinet, continue to hide as the fourth wave crashes into Alberta. Their collective refusal to face Albertans is a shameful dereliction of duty.

“The leadership of Alberta Health Services is cancelling surgeries to find space for COVID-19 cases. Jason Kenney has nothing to say to the hundreds of Albertans who are waiting and worrying, often in pain, as their conditions worsen and their surgeries are cancelled.

“As Dr. Verna Yiu said yesterday, there is a limit to what the healthcare system can absorb. I worry that we will soon be testing the limits of our hospitals and the healthcare heroes who work in them.

“At a time of great danger for Albertans, Jason Kenney and the UCP have abandoned their posts.”

“Instead of proactive measures to contain the fourth wave, we’ve seen bed closures, cancellations of elective surgeries, serious staff shortages, and responsibility passed on to school boards and municipalities to protect public health,” added Sandra Azocar, executive director for Friends of Medicare. “This shameful negligence must stop. If Kenney, Shandro, and Hinshaw are unwilling to do their jobs, they should resign.”
