Central Alberta Buccaneers hosting AFL final Saturday

The Central Alberta Buccaneers are hosting the Alberta Football League final this Saturday (Aug. 28) at Great Chief Park, playing host to the Edmonton Elite.

The Bucs were able to secure first place in the league and a spot in the AFL Semifinal following a nail-biting win over the Edmonton Elite 46-42 back on Aug. 14.

After trailing by 21 points at halftime, the Bucs were able to dig deep in the second half and pull ahead, thanks to Buc’s kicker Aideen Samadi. Tied at 42-42 following a Buc’s touchdown, Samadi made the heads-up decision to boot the ball through the end zone on the kickoff, giving them a rouge and putting them one point ahead.

Samadi ended up adding a field goal late in the fourth quarter while the Bucs defence shut down Edmonton for the 46-42 win.

That win brought the Airdrie Irish to Red Deer to face the Bucs in the semi-final on Aug. 21.

That game wasn’t as close as their contest with the Edmonton Elite, as the Bucs hammered the Irish by a score of 45-6, which set the stage for them to once again host the AFL championship in Red Deer.

Kick-off is at 6 p.m. at Great Chief Park.
