Red Deer with 237 active COVID-19 cases

Provincial health officials are reporting 15 new cases of COVID-19 in Red Deer on Thursday, bringing the total number of active cases in the city now to 237.

Recoveries total 5,851 – up 14 from Wednesday, while the total number of cases identified in Red Deer since the start of the pandemic is 6,131.

The virus’ death toll in the city remains at 43, with the last one reported July 6.

The Central Zone as a whole has 967 active cases as of Thursday, up 93 from Wednesday. There are 30 hospitalizations, up four from Wednesday, with five people receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as Wednesday.

The Central Zone has had 179 deaths linked to COVID-19, up three from Wednesday.

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

Across Alberta, another 1,112 new cases of COVID-19 were announced on Thursday, bringing the total number of active cases across the province now to 9,066 – up 570 from Wednesday.

With 10,572 tests conducted over the past 24 hours, the test positivity rate is roughly 10.5 per cent.

Of the active cases, 7,131 are variants of concern, or 78.7 per cent of all active cases.

There are 308 Albertans currently in hospital with COVID-19, up 24 from Wednesday, with 64 of those patients in ICU, up five from Wednesday.

The province’s death toll is now listed as 2,360, up four over the past day.

There are currently 2,857 active cases of COVID-19 in the Edmonton zone, 2,673 in the Calgary zone, 1,491 in the North zone, 1,055 in the South zone, and 23 additional cases in unconfirmed locations.

VACCINATIONS

Alberta has now administered 5,520,209 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of Aug. 25.

As a result, 77.6 per cent of Albertans aged 12+ now have at least one dose (66.0% total population), while 69.2 per cent of Albertans aged 12+ are now fully vaccinated (58.8% total population).

According to Dr. Deena Hinshaw, of the 244 non-ICU patients, 79.1 per cent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 64 patients in ICU, 98.5 per cent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

“Between June 1 and Aug 25, 88 per cent of COVID ICU patients were unvaccinated,” Hinshaw Tweeted on Thursday. “Vaccines work at reducing COVID-19 infections and severe outcomes in our homes and our communities.”

As of Aug. 26, 68.4 per cent of eligible Red Deerians have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, which represents 58.9 per cent of the city’s total population.

61.6 per cent of eligible Red Deerians are now fully vaccinated with two doses, which represents 53.1 per cent of the city’s total population.
