City of Red Deer provides $75,000 for Riggers, CFR

Two major sporting events in central Alberta have received a nice boost from Red Deer city council.

Council approved $25,000 to the Red Deer Riggers Baseball Organization to support the 2023 Men’s AAA National Championship, and $50,000 to be the exclusive opening ceremonies sponsor at the 47th Annual Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) taking place this fall.

The Riggers were set to host the AAA National Championship this year, but it was cancelled back in April due to COVID-19 concerns and rescheduled for Aug. 23-27, 2023.

$25,000 was approved for the AAA National Championship at the time that it was originally scheduled for in August of 2021. City officials say this decision simply re-confirms that same amount for the rescheduled event.

The 2020 CFR was also postponed until Nov. 3-7, 2021 at Westerner Park.

The money is from the City’s Event Hosting & Outgoing Sponsorship funding, which has a budget of $425,000 and was approved in 2020.

Mayor Tara Veer says these two national events will have big impacts on the community and will continue to highlight Red Deer on a national stage.

“As identified in our strategic plan, we are striving to be a chosen destination, attracting events that generate investment and enhance our community identity. It is encouraging to see these efforts pay off and the momentum and energy around event tourism in our community building.”
