Funnel Clouds Possible Monday Afternoon

Rainfall Warning for Red Deer and surrounding region

Meteorologists with Environment Canada say conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds on Monday afternoon.

Funnel clouds are expected to be possible beginning early in the afternoon. The funnel cloud risk will slowly drift to the north, so the advisory will likely be expanded during the afternoon, and ended by early this evening.

Officials say these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.

Residents are reminded to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.

Meantime, a Rainfall Warning remains in effect for many parts of central Alberta.

Heavy rain is expected to bring up to 70 mm for parts of western and central Alberta by Monday night.

Generally, rainfall amounts between 40 and 50 mm are expected, but higher amounts of up to 70 mm are possible in areas impacted by thunderstorms.

Heavy rain will begin to taper off from the northwest Monday afternoon with much of the rain ending by Tuesday morning.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.
