Province announces $154M for continuing care in Indigenous communities

Aug 19, 2021 | 2:03 PM

The Government of Alberta announced Thursday it is investing $154 million under its Continuing Care Capital Program to help Indigenous communities.

The program offers one-time grants to support the build, upgrade and renovation of continuing care spaces.

The funding is under three streams, the first which focuses on Indigenous groups, with the second for previously identified priority communities, and the third for modernizing existing facilities.

“Residents will have a better quality of life staying closer to their loved ones and communities,” Rick Wilson, Minister if Indigenous Relations, said. “Those communities will also benefit by being able to develop and manage continuing care centres, bringing new employment opportunities for their members.”

Adds Chief Leonard Standing on the Road, Montana First Nation, Maskwacis: “The health and well-being of Elders is of utmost importance – opportunities to design and deliver continuing care close to home is important for all members of our Nation.”

The government adds that this new grant program aligns with its broad commitment to expand continuing care capacity as identified in the Facility-Based Continuing Care Review Final Report.

The deadline for applications is Dec. 17. More information is at Alberta.ca.
