Red Deer Minor Football back to full capacity, needs registrants

Red Deer Minor Football is back, but the association need more numbers.

The pandemic forced the league to reduce the number of players last year in order to meet the cohort requirements laid out by Alberta Health Services. This year, however, the limit is no longer in place.

The league is divided into two age groups with the Atom side made up of kids ages 8-10, while the Pee Wee league consists of kids 11 and 12.

Players older than 12 move on to one of the high school football programs.

Executive member James Donnelly says football can play a big role in a child’s upbringing by teaching them important life skills.

“It’s a tremendous program. Football is one of those sports were kids have to learn to work as a team,” he says. “It’s definitely not an individual sport.”

Registration for either league is open until Aug. 24, and there are no late fees this year if you’re unable to register on time.

Evaluations for the Pee Wee league have already begun, and practice for both leagues start the week of Aug. 24.
