Arrested suspect in alleged Wainwright home invasion from Red Deer

Aug 16, 2021 | 7:37 PM

The suspect arrested today following an alleged home invasion in Wainwright is from Red Deer, according to RCMP.

Mounties in Wainwright, which is three hours northeast of Red Deer, say it was shortly after 10 a.m. on Aug. 16 when they responded to a report of a home invasion on 6 Avenue in that town.

They say one male allegedly forced entry into a home and was armed with a gun.

In excess of 25 police officers from multiple detachments in both Alberta and B.C. responded quickly.

“Preliminary investigation reveals the armed male suspect had reportedly stole a pick-up truck from a nearby location, prior to forcing entry into this residence,” RCMP say. “The reportedly stolen pick-up truck was located nearby by police. After the driver failed to stop for police, a police pursuit was initiated in Wainwright.”

That pursuit continued through multiple jurisdictions, with the suspect allegedly firing at the officers while fleeing.

RCMP deployed a spike belt which successfully halted the vehicle.

The 37-year-old, whom is said to be from Red Deer, was placed under arrest and remains in police custody.

Police say the public is no longer at risk and no physical injuries were sustained by the public or police.

An update will be provided when available, RCMP add.
