DISCOVERING CAPSTONE

Capstone transformed into ‘eclectic’ art installation until Sept. 6

Red Deer’s newest neighbourhood has been transformed into an eclectic art installation for the next few weeks.

From Aug. 13 to Sept. 6, Capstone has become one big art piece called ‘OpenStory,’ the City of Red Deer shares.

The installation is located in nine outdoor locations throughout Capstone and along Ross Street, with visitors encouraged to discover each door and view the complete exhibit.

OpenStory comes from the creative minds of Calgary’s B!G ART, with seven interactive portals combining to tell a visual story of space, science and community.

An eighth door at the corner of Alexander Way and Taylor Drive, which is the entrance to Capstone, showcases a vision for a revitalized downtown and depicts a modernized riverside community, as described by the City.

The ninth door is at Taylor Drive and 49 Street and provides a photo op for participants.

“Capstone is a community that encourages freedom of thought and expression, where the future belongs to inquisitive minds, open hearts and curious souls. There is no better place to host this exhibit,” said Cory Edinga, Capstone Project Manager.

“While art lovers and aficionados visit the OpenStory exhibit, they will move around the community and will see how it has shed its industrial history and is transforming into one of the city’s – indeed Alberta’s – coolest urban communities.”

The City notes that for several years, it has been advancing an ambitious plan to redevelop the former location of its civic yards, transforming the community brick by brick.

“There is a great deal of artistic talent in Red Deer and we wanted to spotlight some of it during the OpenStory art exhibit by offering space for artists to share their inspirations with the public,” added Edinga.

OpenStory and community activities are free to all members of the public and no ticket is required. The exhibit will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. More information, including a schedule of events, is available online at www.liveincapstone.ca/OpenStory.
