Four people taken to hospital after serious crash near Trochu

Aug 11, 2021 | 5:31 PM

UPDATE (7:40, Aug. 11)

RCMP say emergency crews have completed their work on Hwy 21 near Hwy 27 west. Roads are clear and traffic has resumed.

A serious crash in central Alberta sent several people to hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

At this time, RCMP say all injuries are non-life-threatening.

Mounties say emergency crews responded around 1:30 p.m. to a report of a collision on Hwy 21, approximately two kilometres south of the junction for Hwy 27 west. This is about 93 km southeast of Red Deer and three minutes from Trochu.

Three Hills RCMP, a collision analyst, AHS ground ambulance, Three Hills Fire Services, Trochu Fire Services, and STARS Air Ambulance all assisted.

Early investigation suggests a pick-up truck travelling southbound, behind a semi going in the same direction on Hwy 21, crossed the centre line.

When the pick-up crossed over, a collision occurred with an oncoming pick-up truck going northbound on Hwy 21, police say.

The northbound truck was towing a travel trailer, which then made contact with the southbound semi.

Due to the guard rails, all vehicles remained on the highway, however Hwy 21 is blocked and motorists are being rerouted.

“The 43-year-old lone male driver of the pick-up truck travelling southbound, of Lacombe, Alta., was transported via STARS to a nearby hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries. The 41-year-old lone male driver of the semi-truck, of Mannville, Alta., was transported by ground ambulance to local hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” according to RCMP.

“The 69-year-old male driver and 78-year-old female passenger, both of Three Hills, Alta, of the pick-up truck travelling northbound were transported by ground ambulance to local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

An update will be provided once the road is clear, RCMP say.

Early Wednesday morning, a serious crash near Morley, between Calgary and Canmore, killed two people when two cube vans, a car and semi were involved in a collision.
