Alberta adds 501 COVID cases in one day, most since end of May

There are 69 active cases of COVID-19 in Red Deer, up nine over the last two days.

Red Deer added 15 new cases in the last 48 hours, and stands at 5,875 total for the entire pandemic.

Recoveries are up six over the last two days to 5,763, while Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 43, with the last fatality reported July 6.

The Central Zone as a whole has 246 active cases, up 35 from Monday. There are 15 hospitalizations, up two, and three people are in the ICU at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as Monday. There have been 171 deaths in the zone linked to COVID-19, with none reported in the last two days.

The zone’s most recent one-day testing positivity rate (Aug. 10) is 5.75 per cent, with 661 tests done. Yesterday, the reported one-day positivity rate for Aug. 9 was 8.43 per cent with 249 tests done. That is the highest since a one-day rate of 10.21 per cent on May 29.

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

Across the province, Alberta reported 501 new cases on Wednesday out of 8,613 test results for a seven-day positivity rate of 5.31 per cent. There were also 279 new cases reported Tuesday. Today’s total is the highest since May 28.

Active cases are up 389 to 3,769. Of those, 3,046 are variants of concern, or about 80.8 per cent of all active cases.

There are 138 Albertans in hospital because of COVID-19, up nine from Monday, and 31 in intensive care, up five.

Of the 138 people in hospital province-wide, there are currently 77 people in hospital (not in ICU) and 25 more people in ICU (102 total), who are completely unvaccinated.

Another 14 non-ICU, and one in ICU have received just one dose. Therefore, just 21 of the 138 in hospital are fully vaccinated.

Sadly, the province’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 is now 2,331, with one reported today. Two were reported yesterday.

VACCINATIONS

As of Aug. 10, a total of 5,406,352 doses have been administered, up 16,133 in the last two days.

Of Alberta’s 12+ population, 76.5 (+0.1) per cent has received at least one dose (65.1% total population), while 67.2 (+0.3) per cent of the 12+ population is now fully vaccinated (57.2% total population).

In Red Deer, 61,774 (67.4% eligible/58.1% total) people have received at least one dose, up 151 over two days. Meanwhile, 54,730 (59.7%/51.4%) are fully vaccinated, up 297
