Caution urged in light of dry conditions and poor air quality

The City is asking residents to exercise fire caution as dry conditions persist, and air quality fluctuates. The current fire danger risk in Red Deer, as identified by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, is Very High.

In addition, wildfires continue to burn in British Columbia and parts of Alberta, which can contribute to poor air quality. While at a Moderate Risk now, conditions can change rapidly.

Red Deer Emergency Services continues to monitor the conditions and a fire ban will be issued if the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reaches 7 or greater, or if other conditions worsen.

Residents are asked to do their part to reduce the fire risk:

 Check reddeer.ca/firebans or albertafirebans.ca prior to having a back yard fire.

 Review fire pit safety information.

 Do not throw out cigarettes into vegetation, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss dried grasses, mulch, leaves, or similar items-they can easily catch fire.

 Do not discard smoking material out vehicle windows.

Red Deerians are encouraged to monitor the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) when planning outdoor activities.

A heat warning remains in effect for Red Deer.
