Sylvan Lake’s Sean McIntyre taking on chief of staff role at City of Red Deer

Jul 30, 2021 | 11:29 AM

Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre announced earlier this month he would not be seeking re-election this fall, but now, after 11 years of service, he’s stepping down.

In a release from the Town of Sylvan Lake, McIntyre says he is taking on the position of Chief of Staff — not to be confused with City Manager — at the City of Red Deer.

A City spokesperson confirms the role is within the Mayor’s Office, and that McIntyre starts Aug. 26.

“It has truly been an honour to serve my hometown as Mayor and do my utmost to lead the Town of Sylvan Lake. I am grateful for my wife and children, who have selflessly supported me in my time on Council and as Mayor; we decided together to embark on a new chapter of our lives,” says McIntyre.

“After two terms as Mayor and one term as councillor, it’s time to make room for fresh perspectives and ideas and to build on the many successes our community has achieved. I continue to be amazed at the kindness and community spirit that Sylvan Lakers have shown during this time. The Town of Sylvan Lake is more than my workplace, it’s my home. With my whole heart, I thank you and say goodbye to my role as Mayor. I have an unending appreciation for the staff and residents who work so hard to make our community brighter, better, and brilliant all year. I love you, Sylvan Lake!”

In his stead, a member of town council will be named interim mayor at the Aug. 23 meeting. The appointment will be effective until the Oct. 18 municipal election.

“Always willing to listen, the Mayor advocated on behalf of residents, businesses, and the best interests of the Town of Sylvan Lake,” a statement from the rest of council says. “He led the Town of Sylvan Lake through COVID-19, setting an example of compassion and kindness. With both sadness and gratitude, Council says goodbye to our Mayor, but not our friend. We wish him and his family all the best!”

CAO Wally Ferris adds that McIntyre has left Sylvan Lake in a much better place, from his successes with the NexSource Centre, to Pogadl Park, urgent care and financial policies.

Last September, McIntyre was recognized for his outstanding civic leadership by the AUMA.

According to the City of Red Deer’s website, the chief of staff, “provides professional executive advice, corporate guidance and support to the Mayor while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and acting as a point of contact between the City Manager, senior staff, the community, stakeholders, and other orders of government.”

Responsibilities include:

  • act as an executive advisor to the Mayor and Council
  • management of executive support staff in the Mayor’s Office;
  • collaborate with the Mayor and Council and senior staff to ensure coordination of efforts to address municipal priorities and issues;
  • respond to a wide range of issues.

Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer says bringing in someone of McIntyre’s experience will be very beneficial to The City.

“Mayor Sean’s extensive experience, his relational leadership style and his educational background in municipal government will all serve the office of the mayor, and council, but ultimately the citizens of Red Deer incredibly well,” says Veer. “He is a very strong local leader who we know will bring incredible strength to this position, and it’s a privilege to be able to welcome him. He’s excited to hit the ground running and we know he’ll do a great job.”

Veer told rdnewsNOW last week that she isn’t yet ready to announce her election intentions, and that she’s focused on governing. She said she would make an announcement in September once council has wrapped up its scheduled meetings.
