Solar lights added to bus stops to improve safety

Jul 23, 2021 | 2:19 PM

More than 100 bus stops across Red Deer are receiving some extra illumination.

This week, the City began installing solar-powered lights at bus stops, with work to continue through October.

In all, six transit shelters and 96 transit posts will be lit up.

Lights within shelters will turn on automatically once natural sunlight diminishes, and will remain until daylight returns.

Lights on transit posts are activated by pushing a button on the post.

“We are confident these added lights will increase both safety and security for transit users” said Trever Sparrow, Superintendent, Conventional Services. “Once installation is complete, every single Red Deer transit shelter will have lights, in addition to nearly 100 other transit stops.”

The lights are funded through Federal Public Transit Infrastructure Fund and Provincial GreenTRIP grants and were planned as part of the City’s broader Transit Network Improvements Project.

Posts and shelters in areas with excessive tree canopy were excluded from the selection process as they wouldn’t be able to gather enough solar energy during the day, the City explains.

“We were careful in selecting which stops would receive the new lights,” said Sparrow. “We will review the ongoing operation of these new lights to assess if and when more may be installed in the future.”
