75% of eligible Albertans have received one dose, Red Deer down to 10 active cases

Seventy-five per cent of eligible Albertans (aged 12+) have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

That’s equivalent to 2.8 million Albertans, or 63.8 per cent of the entire population. As of July 21, 5,128,351 doses have been administered in Alberta.

In Red Deer, 60,599 (66.1% of eligible & 57.0% *total population) people have received at least one dose, up 81 in the last day. Meanwhile, 50,882 (55.5%/47.8%) are fully vaccinated with two doses, up 417. (*Government of Alberta uses a population of 106,395 for Red Deer; of those 91,672 are eligible)

“Seventy-five per cent of eligible Albertans vaccinated with at least one dose is a milestone to celebrate, but a quarter of eligible Albertans still do not have vaccine protection,” says Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health. “We need to vaccinate as many people as possible now to protect us all in the weeks and months ahead.”

Hinshaw said on social media yesterday that the majority of the province’s new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are among those who are unvaccinated or within two weeks of their first shot.

She shared that 96 per cent of Albertans who have tested positive for the virus since June 1 hadn’t had two doses of vaccine.

LOCAL NUMBERS

Meantime, Red Deer now has 10 active cases, down four from Wednesday, and matching the lowest active caseload since Oct. 9, 2020.

Recoveries are up five to 5,739 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose by one in the last day to 5,792.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 43, with the last one reported July 6.

The Central Zone as a whole has 39 active cases as of Thursday, down seven, with seven hospitalizations and zero people receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, both the same as yesterday. The Central Zone has had 171 deaths linked to COVID-19, with one reported today.

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

Today, Alberta added 106 new cases of COVID-19, out of 6,622 test results for a seven-day positivity rate of 1.09 per cent, up 0.09.

The active caseload is now 676, up from 649. The active caseload reached a new low of 569 on July 14, but has risen ever since.

There are 93 Albertans hospitalized due to the virus, down two, including 26 in intensive care, down one.

Two new deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported in the past day, meaning the provincial death toll is now 2,320.
