Ambulance struck en route to hospital in south Red Deer

A serious collision involving an ambulance took place Tuesday night at one of Red Deer’s busiest intersections.

RCMP say members were dispatched just after 6 p.m. to Gaetz Avenue and 32 Street where a northbound ambulance with sirens and lights had proceeded through a red light.

Police say that initial investigation suggests that upon doing so, the rear of the ambulance was struck by a westbound SUV which had the green light.

The collision caused the ambulance to end up on its side.

RCMP say three occupants of the SUV suffered minor injuries.

As for the ambulance, which was en route to nearby Red Deer Regional Hospital, the two EMS staff suffered unknown injuries and were taken to hospital. One patient inside the ambulance also suffered unknown injuries and was loaded into a new ambulance.

RCMP say injuries are non-life-threatening for the ambulance’s three occupants.

Red Deer Emergency Services, as well as Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene, with the latter now handling the investigation.

Red Deer RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash and hasn’t spoken to RCMP already, to call the detachment at 403-343-5575, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
