Local golfers compete in major amateur tournaments

The 2021 Alberta Open Championship and Alberta Ladies Amateur Title tournaments are now in the books.

The Open was played on the Links course at Wolf Creek Golf and RV Resort in Ponoka this week

It was won by Riley Fleming of Lynx Ridge Golf Club in Calgary. Fleming shot a final score of -12, including rounds of 65, 67 and 69.

The next best competitor was Andrew Harrison of Camrose Golf Group, who shot a three-round total of -6.

The best local score was from Carter Graf, who finished tied for 14th at +4. Graf, a member at Red Deer Golf & Country Club, shot rounds of 72, 70 and 75.

On the ladies’ side, the tournament was hosted this week by Broadmoor Public Golf Course in Sherwood Park.

The winner there was Hailey Katona of Tilbury Golf Club in Ontario.

Katona shot an incredible 29 on the back nine in her final round to win in impressive fashion. She fired rounds of 74, 66 and 66 to finish at -10, five strokes ahead of second place.

Daryl Lynn Nepoose of Ponoka Golf Club was the top player from central Alberta.

Nepoose, from Maskwacis, finished tied for 24th at +23, and rounds of 76, 83 and 80. Her final round included back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12.

Up next on the local golf scene, Eileen Park from Red Deer Golf & Country Club will compete in the 66th Canadian Junior Girls Championship from July 20-23 at Leduc Golf Club.

The tournament is 72 holes and features a field of 106 players.
