County of Stettler added to fire advisory list

Jul 16, 2021 | 11:38 PM

A Fire Advisory has been put into effect for the entirety of County of Stettler No. 6.

The advisory is a result of extended extreme hot and dry weather conditions.

“Stettler Regional Fire departments are currently experiencing a high volume of vegetation fires caused in general by farming equipment, overheating equipment, and unattended outside fires,” says Mark Dennis, Regional Fire Chief.

“We advise the public to use extreme caution and that only necessary burning take place. Be aware of the weather conditions at all times while burning. Extinguish your fire if the change in weather increases the hazard of an open fire. Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure you have the appropriate water and equipment to properly extinguish your fire.”

Dennis also notes that ATVs can start wildfires, so inspections are key to ensure hot spots are free of debris, and that mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.

Otherwise, there are no restrictions on burning at this time.

Dennis outlined the following:

1. NEW PERMITS will be issued on a case-by-case basis and may be restricted or require additional conditions;

2. EXISTING PERMIT holders will be allowed to complete burning within the permit time period with extreme caution;

3. ALLOWS ESSENTIAL BURNING in burning barrels that are constructed of non-combustible material that have a tight fitting metal mesh screen with openings not larger than 15mm;

4. ALLOWS back yard fire pits, safe wood camp fires contained by non-combustible material with a metal mesh screen with openings no larger than 15mm. Portable propane fire pits, Gas or propane stoves and barbecues.

5. ALLOWS fireworks with a permit.

Fire officials will continue to monitor conditions, and a fire restriction or fire ban could be issued.

The Fire Advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
