The Alberta government says more students in grades 7-12 will soon have the knowledge and skills they need to better understand saving, budgeting, spending and investing.

Alberta Education says it is enhancing student financial literacy through partnerships with Enriched Academy and the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education. Both organizations are said to have successful track records of delivering high-quality and engaging financial literacy resources to Canadian students.

“In the upcoming school year, many students will learn about concepts such as costs, interest, debt, investing, insurance, and how the economy can affect their lives,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education, in a government press release. “Financial literacy for students is a commitment we made to Albertans and is an important skill set for students to have inside and outside the classroom.”

In April 2021, Alberta’s government released a call for proposals totalling $1 million to deliver financial literacy programming to junior and senior high school students in the fall. As the successful applicants, Enriched Academy will receive $700,000 and Canadian Foundation for Economic Education will receive $300,000.

Officials say the two organizations will provide grades 7-12 students with a variety of opportunities to learn about financial literacy topics, such as money management, budgeting, credit and student loans.

The programming is expected to serve Alberta’s diverse student populations in both urban and rural communities, including First Nations, Métis and Inuit students. Both organizations will also provide professional learning opportunities for teachers and school leaders, including additional resources to facilitate financial literacy learning.

“Enriched Academy is excited to continue helping Alberta students learn the essential life skills of money management and looks forward to bringing our innovative and engaging approach to personal finance to even more students this year,” says Kevin Cochran, president and co-founder, Enriched Academy.

We saw incredible engagement from students, parents and teachers over the last 12 months and we applaud the efforts of the Government of Alberta and the educators involved for building on that initiative and taking such a proactive approach to delivering these critical life skills.”

“The Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE) is honoured to have been selected as one of the grant recipients,” exclaims Gary Rabbior, president, Canadian Foundation for Economic Education.

CFEE believes that financial literacy is essential to help youth build a healthy and happy financial future. We are delighted to be able to provide a variety of resources and programs that will help Alberta youth be prepared to undertake their financial decisions and actions with confidence and competence.”

Provincial officials say financial literacy is an essential part of everyday life, and younger students in Alberta are also supported in learning these important skills. Its noted, Alberta Education continues to enhance financial literacy resources and programming for grades 3-6 students through a renewed $200,000 grant for Junior Achievement.

“Junior Achievement has proudly delivered financial literacy training to students across Alberta for over 60 years, via our globally renowned non-profit curriculum,” explains Melissa From, CEO, Junior Achievement Southern Alberta.

We are pleased to see the government invest in greater access to financial literacy programming; as an organization we will proudly continue to work with our teacher, school board and community partners in urban, rural, French and Indigenous communities to increase access to these critical skills.”
