Conservative leader visits central Alberta touting plan to fight for western Canadians

Conservative Party of Canada leader Erin O’Toole was in central Alberta on Saturday.

O’Toole is touring communities announcing meeting folks, this after sharing his first steps to “end the mistreatment of western Canadians,” a release this week notes.

Specifically, the opposition leader visited Home Place Ranch, which is between Linden and Three Hills, for a meet and greet with residents.

MPs Earl Dreeshen (Red Deer-Mountain View), Damiek Kurek (Battle River-Crowfoot) and Martin Shields (Bow River) joined him.

“Even as Alberta’s economy suffered with massive reductions in resource revenues, Albertans continued to pay more than their fair share to support the rest of the country,” said O’Toole in the release earlier this week. “That’s why a Conservative government will fix the Fiscal Stabilization Program as a first step to ensuring that Western Canadians are treated equally in our confederation.”

O’Toole added that Alberta is struggling and expects other provinces to be in their corner.

“To begin to address the fact that Albertans have been asked to pay more than their fair share, a Conservative government will implement an Equalization Rebate, to give Albertans back some of the extra money they’ve paid during these tough years,” he said.

“Canada’s Conservatives are here to offer a choice – more of the same from Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and the other parties on the left, or restoring fairness in the West with Canada’s Conservative,” said O’Toole. “Western Canadians deserve respect and a secure future – and I’m here to deliver that.”

According to O’Toole, the equalization rebate would give $5 billion back to provinces paying more than their fair share, with $4 billion allotted for Alberta.
