Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail Police continue to investigate the cause of a train derailment over the weekend.

The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. Friday, about two kilometres south of Lacombe along Highway 2A. A 23-car train derailed causing liquid asphalt to be leaked from at least one car.

After repairs were made and safety inspections conducted, CP reopened the rail line Saturday afternoon. Hwy 2A was also opened late that evening.

“CP is working diligently to ensure the area is cleaned up, remediated and restored,” the rail company says in an email to rdnewsNOW.

“CP thanks local fire officials, local law enforcement, Alberta environment and other stakeholders for their support in responding to this incident. We also thank local residents for their patience and understanding for the inconvenience this incident caused.”

The derailment caused no injuries or fires.
