Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre won’t seek re-election

The long-time mayor of Sylvan Lake is stepping aside once his term is done.

Sean McIntyre, who’s held the title of ‘His Worship’ since 2013, shared in a video on social media Monday that he won’t seek re-election this October.

McIntyre was first elected to Sylvan Lake town council in 2010, just after his 27th birthday, he notes.

“I really feel like it’s time to pass the torch to a new leader with a fresh perspective and fresh legs to bring us into our next season as a community,” said McIntyre.

“I want to thank my amazing family. My wife, Leah, thank you so much for being there for me, day in and day out. Thank you for my kids for understanding when I was too busy to do this or that or was too tired. I don’t think you’ve known me as anything but an elected official and I’m excited to take this next step in our journey together.”

The mayor also thanked his council colleagues for “selflessly serving” the community, as well as staff who work to make sure there is clean water, efficient garbage pick-up, and responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

McIntyre thanks regional partners as well for working together to elevate the region’s quality of life, and volunteers for helping accomplish things the Town couldn’t have achieved otherwise. He also gave acknowledgment to his parents, as well as Elders for sharing how Sylvan Lake can learn and do better.

“It is, and has been an absolute honour to serve my hometown as mayor. I still remember as a little boy riding my bike around the community and saying, ‘Someday I’d love to fix that over there,’ or, ‘Could you imagine if we had this kind of facility over here,’” McIntyre said. “It has been such an incredible honour to be able to contribute to our community to help to plan for our future, and to work with so many awesome people to pursue that vision of what Sylvan Lake can be, and should be today and into the future.”

As of July 5, three candidates have filed papers to run for Sylvan Lake town council, but none for mayor.

Municipal elections in Alberta are scheduled for October 18.
