Man from southern Alberta hamlet wins $1M in vaccine lottery

LANGDON, AB – The first grand prize draw is complete for Alberta’s Open for Summer Vaccine Lottery.

Hailing from Langdon, a hamlet just east of Calgary, Tracey McIvor is now one million dollars richer.

“Lotteries may be about the luck of the draw, but we can control how protected we are against COVID-19,” says Health Minister Tyler Shandro. “Getting two doses of vaccine significantly decreases your chance of infection, so I continue to encourage Albertans to book their appointments as soon as possible.”

As well, hundreds of prizes will be given out for Calgary Stampede admissions, ride packages, rodeos, and other performances. Winners will be notified.

More than 1.7-million Albertans have already entered the vaccine lottery.

“Thanks to the Open for Summer Lottery, it pays to get vaccinated, in more ways than one,” adds Premier Jason Kenney. “While I know Albertans will enjoy these prizes, with greater vaccine protection against COVID-19 than ever before, we all win. Congratulations to today’s winners, we are all celebrating with you as we lift restrictions and open for summer.”

The first vaccine lottery draw took place on the same day Alberta entered the third and final stage of the reopening plan on July 1, meaning nearly all COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

To date, 72.8 per cent of eligible Albertans have received at least one vaccine dose while 42.4 per cent are fully immunized.

This was just the first of three draws in the vaccine lottery.

Each will have $1-million jackpots as well as a variety of other prizes.

The second draw takes place in August with registration closing on August 24.

The third is in September and you will have until September 23 to enter.
