Red Deer Local Immigration Partnership (RDLIP) has released preliminary results from a survey regarding racism in the community.

“Understanding Racism in Red Deer”, was conducted earlier in the year from Feb. 16- Mar. 2.

RDLIP officials say 665 respondents took part in the survey during the two week span, with 60 per cent of respondents being female and 36 per cent of the respondents being male.

85 per cent of respondents were between the ages of 19-60 years old.

70.8 per cent of respondents identified themselves as white; 5 per cent as Indigenous; 3 per cent as black; 3 per cent as bi-racial; 3 per cent as Southeast Asian; and 2.3 per cent Latinx.

82.3 per cent of respondents said their primary language is English. 83.3 per cent of respondents said they were born in Canada.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped us by circulating and answering the survey”, says

Ezgi Sarioglu, Program Manager, RDLIP, in a press release. “This survey has provided us with insight on racism in Red Deer and has helped us not only in shaping the direction of a community-wide anti-racism campaign, but also in understanding the need for supports for those who experience racism.”

RDLIP officials say this information provides the community with a glimpse on the data that was gathered from the survey, and will primarily be used to develop the anti-racism campaign planned to be launched in fall 2021.

RDLIP is also expected to release a full report in order to share the results and help the community understand the extent of racism in Red Deer further.

RDLIP is a community-based partnership funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The organization aims to create a community that openly receives newcomers (immigrants and refugees); embraces cultural diversity; strives to understand the needs of newcomers to provide access to a full range of services and participation in all aspects of society; and works to strengthen the understanding of two-way responsibility and benefit for newcomers and the broader community.
