In her last planned regular COVID-19 update, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health provided statistics she says Albertans should be proud of.

“Cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and our positivity rate are the lowest they’ve been since last summer and early fall,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Tuesday, adding there are only five active cases in all continuing care facilities in Alberta combined.

She added opportunity is knocking and if Albertans keep making wise choices and more people get vaccinated active cases could fall below 500 in a few short weeks. There are currently more than 1,100 active cases in the province.

Red Deer’s active case count rose by one on Tuesday to 29. Recoveries also were up by one to 5,690 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to the city was up three to 5,761.

Sadly, Red Deer also recorded its 42nd death linked to the virus – a man in his sixties who passed away June 27 (no known comorbidities at this time).

Elsewhere locally as of Tuesday (by municipality):

Red Deer County – 8 active cases (down one from Monday)

Sylvan Lake 8 (no change)

Lacombe County 0 (down one)

Lacombe: 4 (-3)

Ponoka County: 16 (-3)

Brazeau County: 9 (-1)

Clearwater County: 6 (-1)

Mountain View County: 1 (–)

Olds: 1 (-1)

Kneehill County: 16 (+1)

County of Stettler: 2 (–)

The entire Central Zone has 126 active cases as of Tuesday, down 11, with 19 hospitalizations, including four receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has had 167 deaths linked to the virus.

There are 1,132 active cases, down 129 from Monday and 228,480 recovered cases in the province, up 186.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 231,911.

There are 61 new cases in the province today, and 16 more variant of concern cases have been identified.

There are now 170 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 36 of which are in ICU, and 2,299 deaths.

The province completed 3,453 tests since the last update.

The positivity rate from then is about 1.6 per cent.

4,266,408 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta through June 28. 72.7 percent of the 12+ population has received at least one dose (61.8% total population) and 40.7 percent of the 12+ population is now fully vaccinated (34.6% total population). In Red Deer, 58,572 people have received at least one done while 36,549 are fully vaccinated.
