CAEP welcomes premier, eager to work with Indigenous on economic goals

Central Alberta Economic Partnership (CAEP) says its chat with Premier Jason Kenney this week was productive and encouraging.

CAEP, an alliance of more than 30 municipalities around Red Deer, met with the premier for a 40-minute chat during the organization’s AGM on June 23.

They say Kenney emphasized rural Alberta’s role in the province’s economic recovery and credited CAEP for its regional work toward a better connected and more competitive central Alberta economy.

“We are grateful for the Premier’s enthusiasm for CAEP’s work in strengthening our region’s economy,” says John Vandermeer, CAEP Chair and Deputy Reeve of Clearwater County.

Over the next year, CAEP says it will develop a regional economic growth strategy which will define risks and opportunities and help determine the best route to prosperity.

A key aspect of CAEP’s approach, a release notes, is consultation with Indigenous nations to inform and create a strategy which is inclusive.

“It’s great to see CAEP member communities working together for the sake of the region, making progress on our goals, and working cooperatively with First Nations on common goals,” says Sean McIntyre, Sylvan Lake Mayor and chair of CAEP’s Transportation and Logistics Task Force. “The future is bright for our partnership and our region.”
