Salvation Army summer camp going virtual
The Salvation Army’s summer camp program is going virtual this year to help make sure kids all over Alberta still get to experience camp – or as close as possible due to COVID-19 restrictions.
All Salvation Army overnight summer camps were cancelled for camper safety but the desire to make sure kids didn’t miss out on another year of camp was the push needed to get creative and provide a safe alternative. Camp staff will provide the content for the hour-long Virtual Camp that runs Monday-Friday, with sketches, singing, games, crafts, and more.
“Summer camps are important for kids to get away from their daily lives, have new experiences, and make new friends,” says Lieutenant Erin Metcalf, Divisional Youth Secretary for the Alberta & Northern Territories Division. “We believe camp changes lives and has such a positive impact, that we didn’t want them to miss out on it for a second year, so we decided to go virtual and bring camp to them.”
Parents can register their kids for the free, 5-day camp they access online for one hour a day, Monday-Friday. Kids registered will receive a camp kit that includes a journal, snacks, crafts, a devotional book, some camp swag, and the zoom link to participate. A personalized tie-dye pillowcase will also be given to each participant as a farewell gift at the end of summer.
